Industrial Visit of III B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Students

B.Tech Third Year (2012-16 Batch) Students of Mechanical Engineering went for an educational tour to visit various industries in and around Chennai, Tamil Nadu, during 3rd - 7th February 2015. On 3rd February, the students visited Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) and viewed the body shop, assembly lines and robots. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to visit HMIL, which is the 2nd largest automobile manufacturer and leading exporter in our country. The same day, in the afternoon, students got a chance to visit SCHWING Stetter, a German-based company, who deals with manufacturing concrete pumps, transit mixers and related accessories.

On 4th February, the students visited Ashok Leyland, Ennore, Chennai, which is part of Hinduja group. The Ennore plant is the mother plant for Ashok Leyland and accounts for 40% of their production and manufactures vehicles and important aggregates like engines, gearboxes and axles. Heavy CNC machines were being used for the manufacture of crank and camshafts. The students were able to learn the practical applications of various machines and processes which were related to their curriculum.

Next, the students visited Brakes India Ltd., which is part of TVS group, located at Melmaruvathur. The students were fortunate enough to have detailed observation and to have minute details of various types of brakes. Brakes India Ltd., is the leading supplier of brakes and clutches to all four-wheeler manufacturers. The last day, students visited Neyveli Lignite Corporation, a "Navaratna" Government of India Enterprise. NLC operates three open cast lignite mines and uses them for their thermal power stations which have a total installed capacity of 2490 MW. The power generated from these thermal power stations, after meeting the internal requirements, is shared by the southern states viz., Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territory of Puducherry.

A total of 30 students visited the above companies, accompanied by the department faculty - Mr. M. Praveen and Mr. K.V.G. Rama Seshu and our society Chennai liaison officer Mr. Arokiadoss. The students would like to express their heartfelt thanks and are indebted to the management of Sri Vishnu Educational Society and the Human Resource managers of the above companies for giving them an opportunity to visit these companies.
